Overflow developer is collected and pumped through a strongly basic Ion Exchange Resin. The strongly basic resin removes the decomposition products (DP) and adsorber dyes in the color developer. After the dye and decomposition products are removed, the developer is pumped through an anion exchange resin to remove the bromide. The result is a color positive developer with very low decomposition products, adsorber dyes, and bromide. With this procedure a, a high quality color positive developer replenisher can be mixed.

The resin columns are regenerated with a sodium chloride (brine) solution and a sodium bicarbonate solution. To minimize pressure drop through the resin column the unit automatically backwashes the columns for approximately 15 minutes each day. The developer in the resin tanks is blown back to the collection tank, the resin is back washed, and the backwash is blown to drain. The ion-exchange unit includes filters before and after exchange to provide high quality developer.
